Is radon really a serious health risk?

Scientists are more certain about radon risks than risks from most other cancer – causing substances.  The statement from the US Surgeon General:

"Indoor radon gas is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and breathing it over prolonged periods can present a significant health risk to families all over the country. It's important to know that this threat is completely preventable. Radon can be detected with a simple test and fixed through well-established venting techniques." January 2005

Radon exposure accounts for over 21,000 lung cancer deaths a year in the US - the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths behind smoking compared to second-hand smoke causing 3,000 deaths a year.

If my neighbor’s test had a low radon result, my home is safe,

too, right?

Wrong!  Radon levels vary widely from home to home depending on the geology around and beneath the home, and the home’s construction.  Also, the neighbor’s house may not have been tested properly.

Is it expensive to operate the system?

The system fan runs continually, yet typically uses as much electricity as a 60-100 watt light bulb.
